Napoleonville, the parish seat, is the only incorporated community in the parish, with a population was 686 during the 2000 census and a total area of 0.2 square miles.
Location & Naming Tradition
The village is located along the banks of Bayou Lafourche, and tradition says the area was named by a French settler who had served in the French army under Napoleon Bonaparte.
The first permanent settlements were made in the middle of the eighteenth century by both French and Spanish settlers. The population grew between 1755 and 1764 as exiled Acadians entered the area.
